Facebook makes people strange

The problem with not being on Facebook is that you tend to notice its effect on your friends. They start behaving oddly.

One woman dropped by my house, at a time convenient for her, and seemed surprised that I wasn't prepared to stop what I was doing to entertain her. "But I announced on Facebook that I'd be in the neighborhood!" (And no, she's not the Queen of England. Not an evil person either, usually.)

Another example? I got an email from a friend. "Those of you who are on Facebook will have heard the story of the scandal behind X's baby picture. And here's another picture of Z, and you all know about her story. " Um... no, I don't know the story. Should I care?

To me, Facebook is another networking tool. It is not the whole world. I suppose it's not FB itself that is teh evil; it's people's reactions to it. People get swallowed up by Facebook, or World of Warcraft, or any number of other time sinks perfectly good software applications.

I don't get it either. Why not just lease a billboard in Times Square and announce all the trivial details of your life, if you really think it's that fascinating?

I'm probably going to open an FB account for the sole purpose of seeing family photos, but even then I'm limiting the privacy setting strictly to specific family members.

I was a long time getting a FB account, and still have some concerns about privacy. I'm careful what I put up, but it's been really good for staying connected with friends, and getting back in touch with people. I get a kick out of the adventures and triumphs of other people's lives, and the commentary that sometimes happens, but I don't substitute it for real life.

How is the purge going? Did you keep a list of what you purged? What are you going to do with all the extra space?

I also use Facebook to catch up with people I haven't seen in a long time. But I also avoided it for as long as I could.
The idea that everyone needs to know everything you are doing (and every thought that pops into your head) is kinda ridiculous. Which is why I don't Tweet.
A lot of people are not careful with their privacy settings. Which is why they were robbed after posting on FB that they were going on vacation for two weeks and no one would be home!!!!
Between FB, Twitter, and "reality" TV, we're all starting to believe that everything we do is fascinating, and that the world revolves around US. It isn't, and it doesn't. A little perspective would be a great thing!!!!!

Not on FB, and really don't want to be. I already spend too much time online.

I also don't text, but that is a whole 'nother dilemma.

you are lucky you don't have any friends like me. i just make my fb-less friends a profile and wait for them to figure it out. saves me alot of time on phone calls!

A profile? You mean like a silhouette of you facing left, so everyone can admire the shape of your nose?

I tried FB, didn't like it, it reminds me of being in a tiny room with several dozen people, letting a fart, and everyone comments on the smell. Even if it's an SBD...

Y'know, I never heard it described quite like that before!

I ended up signing in because I was "Friended". I take a look every so often but I don't get the attraction at all.
