Quote du jour: “You have four years to be irresponsible here. Relax. Work is for people with jobs. You'll never remember class time, but you'll remember time you wasted hanging out with your friends. So, stay out late. Go out on a Tuesday with your friends when you have a paper due Wednesday. Spend money you don't have. Drink 'til sunrise. The work never ends, but college does...” - Tom Petty
... sigh... maybe I could go back to school... again... oh hell. What would I do with a Ph.D? If you get one, then you're condemned to teach, right? The one thing I've always been sure of is that I don't want to teach. Ever. At all. Really. From the time I was a wee lass I've known this. (Did I mention that I was raised by teachers? Who were my parents, conveniently enough. When I was small, I thought the whole world got summers off. Came as quite a shock when I realized the truth.)

Exercise fail. Where is Lori when you need someone to blame?

School is overrated. That laissez-faire attitude doesn't work if you have a very ingrained guilt complex like the one I've been carting around since birth.

Yes, please.
Depends on field... the condemned to teach part, that is. In a lot of fields you can get really good Not Teaching jobs (although I have to say that one perk of a Ph.D. is that teaching college students is actually a lot better than any other sort of students because if they don't want to be there, they mostly just ignore you).
And you'd get to relive college by spending years in grad school which involves a lot of the hanging out with friends and drinking time. I *loved* grad school! (Ok, it's very embarrassing to admit that. You're not supposed to love grad school.)
Yeah... I think that quote was mostly directed toward undergraduates.
Actually, I loved grad school too. A Master's degreee in English involves reading lots and lots of good books (okay, and a few not so good) and then getting to write about them. What's not to like about that?
Well, yeah. Ph.D. in English and you're going to be doomed to teach, if you're lucky enough to find a job.
Grad school. *shudder*
