New year, new challenge

Out with the old, on with the new. Challenge, that is.

One thing I noticed from going car-free for a month was that I spent more time going to the store and I spent more money at the store. Because I couldn't carry as much stuff on a bicycle, I shopped more often. The more I shop, the more I spend. Spending more is bad.

I wanted to try something different. I wanted to see if I could not go to the store for a month. Use up the food that I have in the pantry or the freezer. What would that be like? Can I do this? I have no idea. I want to find out.

So yesterday, I started up the evilSUV and went off to the grocery store. (I wanted to stock up on things like frozen vegetables and toliet paper.) Today, my freezer is stuffed to the gills with fruit and vegetables. If there's a power outage, I might have to re-think this idea.

I do realize it would be smarter to try this in the late summer, but I want to try it now. I'm curious. Maybe this will be a fabulous experience.

Exercise du jour: 30 minutes on the elliptical. I can do it.
Done. I did it!

I could almost do the no shopping thing, as long as we're talking food. Clothes? Nope...couldn't go a month without stepping into a TJ Maxx.

I strongly dislike shopping of any kind (even Costco now). I'll be curious to see how it goes. Good luck!

Hmmmm... I fear I am a bit of a food hoarder. Not sure if it's a security thing or just the fact that I loathe shopping of any variety.

I think I could probably make it several months easy, and longer if I really had to. (That's just with the food I already have on hand. Actually... if I REALLY had to, I could probably survive on nothing but my bumper crop of pumpkins for at least several weeks!

A major power outage would be a major bummer though... especially where the chest freezer is concerned!

I'm chuckling about Shelley's comment... other than socks and underwear, I haven't purchased a new item of clothing in 7 years! Did I mention I loathe shopping? :)

Have fun with your challenge!

Shelley, that's because you look so good in the clothes after all that jogging and stuff!
Lee, this is also another way to use the car less :)

Eco CL, I do think we feel more secure with a full pantry. So... Is food shopping another way of dealing with insecurities as well as a way to stuff our faces?

Good luck! Doing the major shop once a month, and getting perishables every other week, can save you a ton.

hmmm... food shopping and insecurities, I'm sure there is a connection. After hurricane Katrina, I actually went out and spent several hundred dollars stocking the pantry so I'd be prepared in case of emergency -hurricanes being so prevalent here in Denver, don't you know.

When I was a kid my best friend was a Mormon and, as their religion requires, they had a HUGE pantry (an entire spare bedroom) filled to the brim with enough food to last for a year. As a kid, I thought it was amazing because there was ALWAYS ice cream somewhere in one of those giant freezers! Her family was one of the few things that kept me sane throughout my crazy dysfunctional childhood, so maybe some part of me is trying to recreate the security that I always felt when I was at her house?

Thoughts to ponder...

Bon courage Merry, report back if it works.

The only drawback I can see would be having frozen rather than fresh veg.

I predict that you'll save loads though.

My freezer is full of frozen strawberries. I need to figure out what to do with them, other than smoothies. Hmmmm....

Dacquiris?

Interesting experiment!

I'm hating shopping much less this winter. There's a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's within walking distance, and it's a neighborhood full of gay hipsters and other interesting folks. So while it would be much more efficient to meal plan, I end up doing the Parisian thing and shopping nearly every day. Would probably be different if I had a "real" job.
