Things have changed. I know this, because everyone tells me so.
One older woman (i.e. older than I am, yes it's all about me) confessed, a bit wistfully, that all she was familiar with were the days when you sent out a résumé and sat by the phone.
Even since the last time that I went a-hunting, things have changed. Nowadays, apparently, you cannot hope to get a job unless you have Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. I'm hoping that I don't actually have to go on FaceBook as well.
So far, I'm not impressed with this "job consultant" guy. Either he's too busy to respond to my emails or all my emails are going into his spam filter. I would expect someone in his position to be able to handle a minor issue like that. I am frustrated with him.
Today I have a seminar on Job Search Communications. I have a feeling the word 'branding' is going to come up.

So today I'm going to go a little longer on the elliptical. And I'm going to feel grateful that I have an elliptical machine to use.

The hunt is never fun. If you're not getting the response you need/want from your "consultant", treat him like a physician and get a second opinion. Also, I noticed Aerotek (agency) has a few listings for medical writers. May be worth checking out.
Branding...
We have yammer at work (which is like twitter for corporations I guess but you're not limited to 140 characters which sometimes is a shame...) and they were talking "employee branding". My mind immediately came up with some not so pleasant images.
I wouldn't be surprised either if "branding" was part of what you heard today. Please don't tell us if if does; I fear it will make me cry.
This is going to sound like a spam comment, but have you considered competing for government contracts as a freelancer? I did a quick search on Federal Business Opportunities (fbo.com) and there some advertisements by NIH and the CDC. If you were interested in pursuing anything like that (or even plain old federal jobs), I could give you some suggestions for navigating the maze. (Not spam, I swear. Just would like to help if that would interest you.)
Oh goodness. I've been fantasizing lately about quitting my (good) job and looking for work as 1) a bar tender, 2) a sous chef, or 3) that person that pours rum into coconuts on a sunny tropical beach, which I guess is pretty much the same as #1.
Keep looking until you find a consultant who really does respond.

Hmm, you're a "self-respecting" woman with at least "a grammar school education"... wonder if they're still hiring at Southern Bell? (Or should it be spelled "Belle?")
I suspect the right job will come along before too long, but meantime, the transition sounds a bit frustrating! Hope you're enjoying a little break between jobs. Smell some roses!

My company paid for a month with a coach service. She was amazing. Like a more practical, less hyper version of Tony Robbins. Plus the usual seminars etc.
